The Cape Hotham Light is a lighthouse located in the Northern Territory of Australia, situated on Cape Hotham on the coastline of the Van Diemen Gulf. It is about 80 kilometers northeast of the territory capital of Darwin. The lighthouse marks the entrance to Clarence Strait, the eastern approach to Darwin.
The Cape Hotham Light was constructed between 1913 and 1920 as part of the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service's "Golden Age of Australian Lighthouses." The lighthouse was officially lit on November 9, 1928, and it is operated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. The physical features of the lighthouse include a 54-foot-tall square pyramidal tower made of metal, with a balcony and lantern at the top.
The lighthouse is an active aid to navigation, with a range of 12 nautical miles for the white light and 9 nautical miles for the red light. The light characteristic is three flashes, one every two seconds, repeating every 15 seconds. The site is accessible by boat from Darwin, but the tower is closed to the public. The lighthouse is named after Admiral William Hotham, who was honored by John Clements Wickham in 1839.
