Point Charles Light, officially known as Charles Point Lighthouse, is an active lighthouse located on a headland at the northern end of the Cox Peninsula, approximately 21 kilometers northwest of Port Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Established in 1893, it is the oldest lighthouse in the Northern Territory.
The lighthouse features a hexagonal tower with a central cylinder, balcony, and lantern, standing at a height of 105 feet (32 meters) with a focal height of 128 feet (39 meters). The structure is marked by a red tower with a horizontal white band and a white lantern. It consists of a cast wrought iron skeletal tower and was built with a central tube almost 2 meters in diameter, with struts and braces.
Point Charles Light was established in 1893, after numerous shipwrecks occurred in the approach to Port Darwin in the 1880s. The Marine Board recommended lights be erected at key points, and funds were raised to build the lighthouse. Chance Bros of Birmingham, England, constructed the lighthouse, which was officially opened on 1 February 1893 by Charles James Dashwood, the Government Resident of the Northern Territory. The lighthouse is currently managed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and remains an active aid to navigation.
