Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse

The Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is located on the headland of Cape Leeuwin, the most south-westerly point on the mainland of the Australian Continent, in the state of Western Australia. The lighthouse was constructed by a company led by M. C. Davies and was opened in 1895. It is a cylindrical tower on a square base, built of local limestone, and stands at a height of 39 meters with a focal height of 57 meters.

The lighthouse was originally designed to show two lights, a higher white light and a lower red light, although the lower light was never installed. The light tower features a 2nd order Chance Brothers Fresnel lens and has a distinctive characteristic of flashing white every 7.5 seconds. The lighthouse was automated in 1982 and now serves as an important automatic weather station. The lighthouse's buildings and grounds are currently vested in the local tourism body.

The Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse has a rich history, having been commissioned with great ceremony in 1895 by John Forrest, the Premier of Western Australia. The lighthouse played a significant role in maritime navigation and was also equipped with a radio navigation beacon from 1955 to 1992. Today, the lighthouse is a popular tourist attraction and is listed on the Commonwealth heritage list and the State Register of Heritage Places, recognizing its historical and cultural significance.
