Cape Norman Light is located at the northernmost point of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The lighthouse was first built in 1871 by the Canadian government as a wooden, hexagonal structure, and it was lit for the first time on October 1, 1871. The current lighthouse has an octagonal tower with a balcony and lantern, a concrete base, and a concrete tower, with a white tower and red lantern.
The lighthouse has undergone changes over the years, including the installation of a steam-operated fog alarm in 1890. The lighthouse was managed by the Campbell family for many years, with John Warren Campbell serving as lightkeeper and fog alarm engineer, and later his great-grandson Alvin Campbell, and then Warren Campbell taking over as lighthouse keeper from 2002 to present. The lighthouse was automated in 1992, but it is still an important aid to navigation.
The Cape Norman Light is an important part of the region's maritime history, and it continues to serve as a vital aid to navigation. The lighthouse is managed by the Canadian Coast Guard, and it is listed as one of the lighthouses in Canada. The location is also notable for its barren, limestone headland, which has been featured on maps since 1713, initially as Cap Dordois and later as Cap Normand, before being anglicized to Cape Norman.
