Cape Spencer Lighthouse

The Cape Spencer Lighthouse is located in South Australia on Cape Spencer, within the locality of Inneston on the Yorke Peninsula. The original navigation aid was established as an automatic beacon in 1950, following a lengthy period of lobbying by local residents. This initial beacon was later replaced in 1975 by an automatic lighthouse facility.

The lighthouse itself is a square tower with an octagonal balcony and lantern, constructed from concrete and standing at a height of 9 meters. The tower is unpainted, while the lantern is white. The light emitted has an intensity of 25,000 cd and a range of 23 nautical miles. The characteristic of the light is a continuous red light shown over nearby reefs, with a pattern of three flashes every 15 seconds.

The Cape Spencer Lighthouse is currently managed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. It has played an important role in maritime safety in the region, particularly in guiding ships through the treacherous waters of the Spencer Gulf and Investigator Strait. Despite its relatively recent construction, the lighthouse has a significant history, with its establishment being the result of a 16-year campaign by local residents for improved safety measures in the area.
