Cape Vidio is a prominent cape located on the Asturian coast in the municipality of Cudillero, near the village of Riego de Abajo, in the parish of Oviñana, Spain. The cape is situated on the Cantabrian Sea and is one of the most important capes in Asturias, offering stunning views of the surrounding coastline, including Estaca de Bares to the west and Cape Peñas to the east.
The cape is geologically formed from a combination of quartzite and slate, shaped by millions of years of erosion from the Cantabrian sea, resulting in a dramatic 80-meter cliff that rises abruptly from the sea. The cape is home to a lighthouse, which was constructed between 1948 and 1950, making it the last lighthouse built in Asturias and one of the newest in Spain. The lighthouse is automated and operated remotely by maritime signal technicians, emitting a light signal with a range of 35.8 miles in good weather and 16 miles in fog.
The cape and its lighthouse are easily accessible by car or public transportation, with a short walking trail leading to the cape and several viewpoints and picnic areas along the way. The area is also an important breeding ground for seabirds, including the European shag and gulls, and features a cave formed by wave erosion that can be visited at low tide. With its stunning natural beauty and rich history, Cape Vidio is a popular destination for visitors to the Asturian coast.
