Farol das Contendas
The Farol das Contendas, also known as the Ponta das Contendas Lighthouse, is located on the island of Terceira in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. The lighthouse is situated along the promontory of Contendas, in the civil parish of São Sebastião, municipality of Angra do Heroísmo. It was constructed with masonry and features a square tower with a balcony and lantern rising from a 1-storey keeper's house, with a white tower and red lantern.
The lighthouse has a second-order lantern for a fifth-order light with six clarions, and it currently uses a crystal optic with a third-order Fresnel rotational beacon. The construction of the lighthouse began in 1930, under the direction of António Tomaz, and it was inaugurated on 1 February 1934. The lighthouse was built to illuminate a 240° focal range, and it has been serving as an important aid to navigation in the area.
The history of the Farol das Contendas is interesting, with the first plans for its installation dating back to 1882. However, the project was delayed, and the lighthouse was not built until nearly 50 years later. The site was chosen for its strategic location, and the lighthouse has been serving the maritime community ever since its inauguration. Today, the Farol das Contendas is an important part of the Azores' maritime heritage, and it continues to serve as a vital aid to navigation in the region.
