The Farol de Regufe, also known as the Regufe Light, is a lighthouse located in the city of Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal, in the neighborhood of Regufe. It was built in 1886 and features a unique tripod tower with a central cylinder, standing at 22 meters tall with a red tower and lantern. The lighthouse was designed with a cast iron tower and has a distinctive shape, making it one of the notable examples of iron art in Northern Portugal.
The Farol de Regufe was inaugurated on March 24, 1892, and served as a guide for ships in Póvoa Bay, along with the Farol da Lapa. Over the years, the lighthouse has undergone several changes, including automation in 1976 and deactivation in 2001. However, it was reactivated in 2015 and is now part of the city's cultural and historical landmarks. The lighthouse has also been restored and is open for visitors, offering tours and sightseeing opportunities.
The Farol de Regufe has become a symbol of the Regufe neighborhood and is an important part of the city's history and identity. Despite being deactivated for some time, the local population opposed any plans to transfer the lighthouse to another location, and it has since been restored and reopened to the public. Today, the Farol de Regufe is a popular tourist attraction and a notable example of Portugal's rich maritime history and architecture.
