The Fort Denison Light, also known as the Pinchgut Light, is a lighthouse located on a small island in Sydney Harbour, New South Wales, Australia. The lighthouse is situated on top of a Martello Tower at Fort Denison, a former penal site and defensive facility. The island is downstream from the Harbour Bridge, near Potts Point and the Royal Botanic Garden. The lighthouse was built in 1913, and its physical features include a cylindrical tower with a balcony and lantern, standing at a height of 20 feet.
The lighthouse has an interesting history, having been equipped with an acetylene gas carbide lamp that was later converted to electricity by 1926. The station also includes a tide gauge, navigation channel markers, and a fog bell. In 2003, the lightroom structure was removed for renovation, which involved disassembling the structure, removing paint, and welding new steel patches onto corroded areas. The lantern was returned and reinstalled in 2004.
Today, the Fort Denison Light is an active lighthouse, managed by the Port Authority of New South Wales, while the site is managed by the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service as part of the Sydney Harbour National Park. The island is accessible by boat, and guided tours are available for a fee, allowing visitors to explore the tower and learn more about its history. The lighthouse is still operational, with a range of 5 nautical miles and a characteristic of flashing white light every 15 seconds.
