The French Pass Lighthouse is located at the top of the South Island in New Zealand, opposite D'Urville Island. It was built in 1884 and stands at a height of 7 meters above sea level, with a focal height of 3 meters. The lighthouse is a cast iron tower with a drum type lens and an incandescent bulb, emitting a fixed light with red and white sectors.
The lighthouse is significant because it marks a channel through the turbulent waters between D'Urville Island and the South Island, which has the fastest tidal flows in New Zealand. The tidal stream changes direction four times a day and can reach speeds of up to 8 knots. The lighthouse was automated in 1961 and is now managed by Maritime New Zealand.
The French Pass Lighthouse is also notable for being New Zealand's lowest lighthouse, with an elevation of only 3 meters above sea level. Its companion beacon, located on the outer edge of the reef, is even higher at 5 meters. The lighthouse has been an important aid to navigation in the region, and its history and technical features make it a significant part of New Zealand's maritime heritage.
