The Gibraltar South Mole Lighthouse is located at the north end of the South Mole of Gibraltar Harbour, a British Overseas Territory at the south end of the Iberian Peninsula. The lighthouse was built with a cast-iron, cylindrical mast with a beacon and is painted white, standing at a height of 17 meters. It has a focal height of 18 meters and a range of 15 nautical miles with a characteristic of flashing white every 2 seconds.
The lighthouse remains operational and is positioned west of the Rock of Gibraltar, on the South Mole at Gibraltar Harbour. It is operated by the Gibraltar Port Authority. The lighthouse is also known as the Gibraltar "A" Head Lighthouse, deriving its name from its location at the "A" head of the South Mole. The South Mole is one of the three breakwaters that form the manmade defenses of the port, which also include the North Mole and the Detached Mole.
The Gibraltar South Mole Lighthouse has an interesting history, with the harbor being protected by both natural and manmade defenses. The harbor has both north and south entrances, with the lighthouse guiding ships into the southern entry between the Detached Mole and the South Mole. Although the exact year the lighthouse was built is not specified, it continues to play an important role in the navigation of ships into Gibraltar Harbour, providing a safe and guiding light for mariners.
