Horsburgh Lighthouse

The Horsburgh Lighthouse is located on the island of Pedra Branca, situated approximately 54 kilometers to the east of Singapore and 14 kilometers from the Malaysian state of Johor. It was built in 1851 and marks the eastern entrance to the Straits of Singapore. The lighthouse is a granite tower with a tapered cylindrical shape, balcony, and lantern, standing 34 meters tall with a focal height of 31 meters. It is characterized by black and white bands and emits a white flash every 10 seconds.

The Horsburgh Lighthouse was named after Captain James Horsburgh, a Scottish hydrographer who mapped many seaways around Singapore in the late 18th and early 19th century. He was known as the "Nautical Oracle of the World" for his contributions to navigation, which saved many lives and properties on the seas between China and India. The lighthouse is an active aid to navigation and has been significant in reducing the dangers of navigation in the area.

The lighthouse has an interesting history, with an inscription on the wall of the Visitor's Room commemorating Captain Horsburgh's contributions to navigation. The inscription, translated from Latin, reads as a tribute to the great hydrographer, stating that the lighthouse was built to honor his memory and to lessen the dangers of navigation. The Horsburgh Lighthouse remains an important landmark and a testament to the maritime history of the region.
