The Isles of Shoals Light, also known as White Island Light, is located on White Island in the Isles of Shoals, New Hampshire. The lighthouse was first built in 1821, but a lantern was lit on the island as early as 1790 by Captain Samuel Haley. The present structure was built in 1865 with a conical tower made of granite and brick, standing 58 feet tall with a focal height of 82 feet.
The lighthouse has a rich history, with notable keepers including Thomas B Laighton, who became keeper of the light after his defeat for Governor of New Hampshire in 1839. The lighthouse was rebuilt during the Civil War with thick granite walls and was later automated in 1987. However, it fell into disrepair and was rescued by The Lighthouse Kids, a group of schoolchildren who raised funds for its restoration.
The lighthouse was damaged in 2007 by a nor'easter, but has since been restored with the installation of a new LED light unit in 2008. The lighthouse and the island are now protected by the state as the White Island State Historic Site. The Isles of Shoals Light continues to serve as an important aid to navigation, with a flashing white light visible for 14 nautical miles and a foghorn that sounds every 30 seconds.
