The Knarrarós Lighthouse is located on the south coast of Iceland, approximately 5 kilometers from the town of Stokkseyri. It was built in 1938-1939 and was the country's first lighthouse constructed of reinforced concrete. The lighthouse was designed by Axel Sveinsson and influenced by the ideas of Guðjón Samúelsson, the state architect of Iceland.
The lighthouse features a unique design that blends functionalism and Art Nouveau styles. It has a two-stage square tower with a balcony and lantern, and stands at a height of 26.2 meters. The tower is unpainted and has black vertical windows, giving it a distinctive appearance. The lighthouse has a light characteristic of one three-second-long flash every thirty seconds.
The Knarrarós Lighthouse is now automated, with the last lighthouse keeper being removed in 2010. Although the tower is closed to visitors, the site is open to the public. The lighthouse is a significant landmark in Iceland and is notable for its historical and architectural significance. It is also listed as one of the country's most important lighthouses, with a country number of VIT-279.
