The Knidos Deveboynu lighthouse is part of the ancient city of Knidos, located in the Muğla Province of Turkey. The city was situated on the Datça peninsula, which forms the southern side of the Gulf of Gökova. Although the exact year the lighthouse was built is not specified, the city of Knidos itself dates back to ancient times, with its history tracing back to the 4th century BC.

The city of Knidos was built partly on the mainland and partly on the Island of Triopion or Cape Krio, with a causeway and bridge connecting the two in ancient times. Today, the connection is formed by a narrow sandy isthmus. The city's walls, both on the island and the mainland, can still be traced throughout their whole circuit, with many architectural remains still present.

The history of Knidos is rich and dates back to ancient Greece, with the city being a Hellenic city of high antiquity. The city was founded by Lacedaemonian and Argive colonists, and it was an important part of the Dorian Hexapolis. Today, the site of Knidos is open to the public and features many archaeological remains, including the ruins of the city's walls and architectural structures. The nearby waters have also yielded significant archaeological finds, including a gold vase now housed in the British Museum.
