La Jument

La Jument Lighthouse is located on a rock off the coast of Ushant Island in Finistère, France, approximately 300 meters from the shore. The lighthouse, built in 1911, stands at a height of 48 meters with a focal height of 36 meters. Its physical features include an octagonal tower with a balcony and lantern, an unpainted tower with a red lantern and balcony, and a Fresnel lens.

The lighthouse has been automated since 1991 and is listed as a historic monument by the French government. It has been called Brittany's most famous lighthouse due to a series of photographs taken by Jean Guichard in 1989, which captured the lighthouse's dramatic struggle against a powerful storm. The lighthouse has effectively increased maritime safety in the area, but the waters off Brittany's west coast remain one of the most treacherous in Europe.

The area has a long history of shipwrecks, with 31 ships lost between 1888 and 1904. The lighthouse was built after the wreck of the SS Drummond Castle in 1896, which resulted in the deaths of over 250 people. The construction of the lighthouse was privately financed by a wealthy Frenchman who had survived a similar shipwreck. The lighthouse has been a crucial aid to navigation in the area, and its dramatic history has captured the imagination of the public.
