The Saint-Mathieu Lighthouse is located on Pointe Saint-Mathieu in Plougonvelin, near Brest, in the Finistère region of France. The lighthouse was first built in 1692, but the current structure was constructed in 1835 among the ruins of the ancient Abbaye Saint-Mathieu de Fine-Terre. It is a significant lighthouse along the French coast, with a theoretical range of 29 nautical miles.
The Saint-Mathieu Lighthouse is a cylindrical tower with a balcony and lantern, standing at a height of 121 feet. Its distinctive white tower with grey trim and red lantern can be seen from a distance. The lighthouse was automated in 1996 and is now open to the public. It is also classified as a historic monument, recognized for its cultural and architectural significance.
The Saint-Mathieu Lighthouse has a rich history, with a beacon signal in place since the end of the 17th century. However, the original light was only lit on dark nights, and its use was eventually replaced by a glass lantern. The current lighthouse was built to signal the direction of the Chenal du Four, a shipping route used by transient ships in the past. Its alignment with the Portzic Lighthouse also indicates the route for entrance to the Goulet de Brest.
