La Vieille Lighthouse is located in the commune of Plogoff, on the northwest coast of France in the department of Finistère, Brittany. Built in 1887, this 27-meter-high lighthouse guides mariners through the Raz de Sein strait and stands on the rock of Gorlebella, also known as the "farthest rock." The lighthouse is constructed from granite and kersantite, features a tapered square tower with a balcony and lantern, and is topped with an unpainted tower and black lantern.
La Vieille's beam has a range of 18 nautical miles and is an occulting light, characterized by a pattern of two flashes followed by one, every 12 seconds. In the early 20th century, a foghorn was installed to aid navigation. The lighthouse achieved notoriety in the 1920s when two disabled war veterans were stranded there for weeks, leading to a change in the law that reserved the job of lighthouse keeper for those who had served in the war. In 1995, La Vieille became one of the last French lighthouses to be automated, following a protest by the keepers.
