Nieuwe Sluis

The Nieuwe Sluis lighthouse is located in the Nieuwesluis community, a few kilometers west of Breskens, in the province of Zeeland, Netherlands. It was built in 1867 and is the southernmost lighthouse in the country. The lighthouse is an octagonal tower, constructed from cast iron, and stands at a height of 28.4 meters. It was designed by Quirinus Harder and features a distinctive black and white color scheme.

The Nieuwe Sluis lighthouse has a rich history, having been part of a series of lights marking the end of the Schelde river and guiding traffic between the North Sea and the harbor of Antwerp. During World War II, the lighthouse was deactivated and covered in camouflage paint, and it was not reactivated until 1951. The lighthouse was originally painted yellow, then received red-white bands, before being painted in its current black and white colors.

The Nieuwe Sluis lighthouse is no longer in use as a navigational aid, and its light was permanently extinguished in 2011. Since then, alternative uses for the building have been investigated, and in 2012, ownership was transferred to a foundation. The lighthouse is now a significant historical landmark and a notable example of 19th-century cast iron lighthouse construction. It remains an important part of the region's maritime heritage and a popular tourist attraction.
