The Paphos Lighthouse is a well-known lighthouse located on the island of Cyprus, near the city of Paphos. It is situated on a peninsula known as Paphos point, which extends into the Mediterranean Sea, at the south western end of the island. The lighthouse was built in 1888, during the British administration of Cyprus, and was a key landfall marker for shipping destined for Paphos harbour from Britain.
The lighthouse is a 20m high whitewashed masonry tower with a cylindrical shape, balcony, and lantern. It is surrounded by a compound containing the keeper's house and outbuildings. The light has a focal height of 36m above the sea and can be seen for 17 nautical miles, consisting of a long flash of white light every fifteen seconds. The lighthouse is still operational and serves as an important aid to navigation for ships traveling through the Mediterranean Sea.
The Paphos Lighthouse has an interesting history, having been built during a time when Cyprus was a key military base protecting the route of ships traveling through the Suez Canal to the British colonies. Today, the lighthouse remains a notable landmark and an important part of Cyprus' maritime history. It is a popular tourist attraction and a symbol of the island's rich cultural heritage.
