The Stella Maris Light, also known as the Har Carmel Light or Haifa Light, is a lighthouse located in Haifa, Israel. It is situated on the seaward face of Mount Carmel, near the Stella Maris Monastery, inside an Israeli Navy base. The lighthouse was first built in 1864, but the current structure was lit in 1928, featuring a 20-meter-tall octagonal tower with a lantern and gallery.
The lighthouse has a distinctive appearance, with a buff tower and red and white vertical stripes on the lantern, as well as a black dome. It stands at a focal height of 179 meters and has a range of 30 nautical miles, although this is partially obscured. The lighthouse is equipped with a Fresnel lens and has a characteristic flashing white light every 5 seconds. Unfortunately, the lighthouse is closed to the public and can only be viewed from a distance.
The history of the Stella Maris Light dates back to Roman times, when an ancient lighthouse was present on Mount Carmel. Over the years, there have been several lighthouses in the area, with one early mention dating back to 1631. The current lighthouse was built on the site of the summer palace of Abdullah Pasha, the ruler of Acre from 1820 to 1831. The structure has undergone significant changes and restorations, including damage during World War I and restoration in 1926. Today, the Stella Maris Light remains an important aid to navigation, although it is not open to visitors.
