The Phare de l'Espiguette is a lighthouse located in Le Grau-du-Roi, Gard, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France. It was built in 1869 and features a 27.40-meter-high square tower with a balcony and lantern attached to a one-story keeper's house. The tower is white with a large horizontal band in the upper part and a white lantern dome. The lighthouse was automated in 1980 and is currently active, emitting three white flashes every 15 seconds from a 1000W halogen lamp, visible up to 24 nautical miles.
The Phare de l'Espiguette is situated on the Pointe de l'Espiguette, near the Gulf of Lion, in an area that has undergone significant changes over the centuries due to the shifting channels of the Rhone delta. The point itself is a protected nature reserve, featuring 197 hectares of sand dunes and a popular naturist beach. The lighthouse has played an important role in the region's maritime history, serving as a beacon for ships navigating the coastline.
The history of the Phare de l'Espiguette dates back to 1869, when the square tower was constructed 150 meters from the mean high tide mark. Over time, the silting of the land has caused the lighthouse to become situated more than 700 meters from the water. Today, the Phare de l'Espiguette remains an important aid to navigation and a notable landmark in the region, attracting tourists and beachgoers to its scenic location.
