The Phare de Tévennec is a lighthouse located at the western tip of Brittany, in the northern part of the Raz de Sein off the Pointe du Van in France. The lighthouse was built to aid navigation through the passage of the Raz de Sein, which presents many difficulties due to rocks and shoals in the area. The Tévennec lighthouse was first activated in 1875 and was automated in 1910.
The Phare de Tévennec stands as a significant landmark, guiding mariners through the treacherous waters of the Raz de Sein. Its construction was a response to the numerous shipwrecks that occurred in the area, including the French ship Séduisant, which was wrecked on the Tévennec rocks in 1796, resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives. The lighthouse has undergone changes over the years, with its sectors being re-drawn from an 1895 nautical chart.
Today, the Phare de Tévennec is listed as a historical monument by the French government, recognizing its importance in maritime history and its role in securing the passage of the Raz de Sein.
