Héaux de Bréhat Lighthouse

The Héaux de Bréhat Lighthouse is located on the Île-de-Bréhat in Côtes-d'Armor, France. It was built between 1834 and 1840 by French engineer Léonce Reynaud, who designed the lighthouse with a unique approach that differed from the typical British-style architecture of lighthouses in 19th-century Brittany. The lighthouse stands 187 feet tall and is classified as a historic monument since 2011.

The Héaux de Bréhat Lighthouse has a fascinating history, with several setbacks and challenges during its construction. The initial temporary structure was destroyed within a year due to strong currents and surf, and the project was restarted with a new design. The lighthouse was finally lit for the first time in 1840 and underwent several changes over the years, including a bombing by the Germans in 1944, which destroyed part of the tower, but it was quickly rebuilt and raised one floor to its current height.

Today, the Héaux de Bréhat Lighthouse is an active aid to navigation and is closed to the public. It was automated in 1982, and its light characteristic has undergone several changes since its construction. The lighthouse is featured on bottles of Glann ar Mor whisky, making it a unique and interesting piece of maritime history.
