Île Vierge Lighthouse

Île Vierge Lighthouse is located off the north-west coast of Brittany, France, in the commune of Plouguerneau, Finistère. The island is situated about 1.5 kilometers off the coast, opposite the village of Lilia. The lighthouse, built in 1845, was the first on the island and had a height of 31 meters. However, it was later replaced by a new, taller structure in 1902.

The current lighthouse, built with granite, stands at a height of 82.5 meters, making it the tallest traditional lighthouse in the world. It features a tapered cylindrical shape with a balcony and lantern, and its range is approximately 50 kilometers. The lighthouse is equipped with four Fresnel lenses, which enable it to guide mariners safely through the English Channel, marking the south-western limit of this body of water.

The island has a rich history, dating back to the establishment of an abbey by the Conventual Franciscans around 1450. The name "Île Vierge" is believed to come from a chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Over the centuries, the island has changed hands several times, with the French state purchasing it in 1844 for 6,000 francs. Today, the lighthouse remains a significant maritime aid, guiding vessels safely through the waters of the English Channel.
