Point Lowly Lighthouse

Point Lowly Lighthouse is located on Point Lowly, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, and serves as a guiding light for ships traversing Spencer Gulf. The lighthouse was constructed in 1883, with the original tower standing at 15 meters in height. It was later raised to its current height of 22.8 meters in 1909. The lighthouse features a conical tower with a double balcony and lantern, marking it as a distinctive landmark in the area.

The Point Lowly Lighthouse has an interesting history, having been upgraded and modified several times since its construction. It was initially powered by a mineral-oil fueled wick burner light, which was later replaced by a kerosene vaporising light unit. The lighthouse was demanned in 1973 and connected to mains electricity in 1979. After being deemed unnecessary by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority in 1993, the light was deactivated, but was reactivated in 1995 following a community appeal. Today, the lighthouse is a tourist attraction and an icon of the Whyalla area, managed by the City of Whyalla.

The Point Lowly Lighthouse Complex, which includes the lighthouse, reserve land, power house, two keepers' cottages, oil store, and signal flag mast, has been listed as a state heritage place on the South Australian Heritage Register since 1994. This recognition acknowledges the lighthouse's significance as one of the oldest European heritage structures in the Whyalla area, pre-dating the establishment of the city.
