The Puysegur Point Lighthouse is located on a remote headland in Southland, New Zealand, overlooking the Tasman Sea at the southwest corner of the South Island. It marks the northwest point of the entrance to Foveaux Strait, separating Stewart Island from the South Island. The lighthouse is one of the most isolated and inaccessible in New Zealand, situated near the entrance to Rakituma / Preservation Inlet in Fiordland National Park.
The original wooden lighthouse tower was built in the late 19th century, after surveys of possible sites were undertaken in 1874. However, it was destroyed in an arson attack on February 8, 1942. A replacement lighthouse was constructed using surplus equipment from other lighthouses and was commissioned in January 1943. The current lighthouse features a rotating LED beacon, providing a vital aid to navigation for vessels passing through the area.
Today, the Puysegur Point Lighthouse remains an important navigational aid, despite its remote and inaccessible location. Its history is marked by the challenges of building and maintaining a lighthouse in such a rugged and isolated environment. The lighthouse has undergone changes over the years, but it continues to serve its purpose, guiding vessels safely through the treacherous waters of Foveaux Strait.
