Rumeli Feneri, also known as Türkeli Feneri, is a historical lighthouse located on the European side of the Bosporus Strait's Black Sea entrance in Istanbul, Turkey. The lighthouse was built in 1856 by the French to provide safe navigation for warships entering and exiting the Black Sea during the Crimean War. It is a two-stage octagonal tower with a balcony and lantern, standing at a height of 30 meters.
The lighthouse is situated across from the Anadolu Feneri lighthouse on the Anatolian side of the strait, with the two lighthouses being approximately 2 nautical miles apart. The line connecting the two lighthouses marks the northern boundary of the Port of Istanbul. The lighthouse was operated by the French until 1933, when the Turkish authorities took over. Today, it is maintained by the Coastal Safety Authority of the Ministry of Transport and Communication.
Rumeli Feneri has an interesting history, with the area being known as the Symplegades in Greek mythology, where two islets were said to destroy any ship that passed between them. The lighthouse has been in service since May 15, 1856, and is still in use today, providing a range of 18 nautical miles. It is a significant landmark in the region and continues to play an important role in maritime navigation.
