The Sultan Shoal Lighthouse is located in Singapore and was built in 1895. It has a cylindrical tower with a balcony and lantern on a two-story dwelling. The lighthouse was constructed to replace a beacon that was previously established on the shoal.
The lighthouse has undergone several changes and upgrades over the years. In 1931, the tower was rebuilt for the installation of modern lighting equipment. In 1984, it was automated at a cost of S$500,000 and has since been unmanned. The lighthouse's lighting system was further upgraded in 1992 with the introduction of LED navigational lanterns. A radar beacon was also added to the lighthouse.
The Sultan Shoal Lighthouse has an interesting history, with the site being struck by lightning in 1875, which led to the construction of a lookout house and eventually the lighthouse. The lighthouse was opened to the public for the first time in 2014 as part of a lighthouse trail walk organized by the National Heritage Board. Today, the lighthouse continues to serve as an aid to navigation, albeit in an automated and unmanned capacity.
