Tarkhankut Lighthouse

The Tarkhankut Lighthouse is located in Crimea at the Tarkhankut Cape, approximately 5 kilometers southwest of the resort village of Olenivka. The lighthouse was built in 1817 and features a tapered cylindrical tower with a balcony and lantern, standing at a height of 33 meters. The tower is made of Inkerman stone, which was mined near Sevastopol and transported to the site by barges.

The lighthouse has a rich history, with its construction beginning in 1816 to ensure safe sailing in the area. The building was initially a basic structure, with various facilities and decorations added later. Over the years, the lighthouse has undergone several upgrades, including the installation of a compressed air fog siren in 1883 and an electric beacon in 1934. The lighthouse's fuel was also changed to kerosene in 1910, requiring extra caution and maintenance on the part of the lighthouse keepers.

The Tarkhankut Lighthouse is still functioning today, despite being in a run-down condition. The area around the building is open to tourists, who can follow the lighthouse keeper's daily routine and climb to an observation platform for stunning views of the Black Sea. The lighthouse's history and current condition make it a fascinating destination for visitors to explore.
