Azhikode Lighthouse

The Azhikode Lighthouse is located in Kerala, India, approximately 8 kilometers west of Kodungallur. It was inaugurated on April 30, 1982, and features a square tower with an open framework base made of concrete. The tower stands at a height of 30 meters and has a focal height of 34 meters. The lighthouse is marked with white and black horizontal bands and a red lantern.

The Azhikode Lighthouse was built to serve as a guiding light for Cochin Port. Prior to its construction, a fixed light was exhibited from a mast near the port entrance from 1964 until the new lighthouse was commissioned in 1982. The lighthouse initially used an incandescent lamp, which was later replaced by a metal halide lamp in 1997. A radio beacon was also installed at the lighthouse, but it was discontinued in 1994 and replaced with a differential global positioning system.

The Azhikode Lighthouse is still in operation today, providing navigational aid to ships and vessels in the area. Its unique design and historical significance make it a notable landmark in Kerala, India. With its powerful light source and location, the lighthouse continues to play an important role in ensuring the safety of maritime traffic in the region.
