The Ponnani Lighthouse is situated in Ponnani, Malappuram district, Kerala, on the south bank of the Bharathappuzha river. It was built in its current form in 1983, but its history dates back to the late 18th century when the area was developed as a strategic port by Tipu Sultan. The lighthouse has undergone several transformations over the years, with a flag staff and oil wick lamp on a steel mast being used as early navigational aids.
The current lighthouse is a 30-meter high concrete tower with a circular cross-section, painted with white and black horizontal bands. It has a metal halide lamp as its light source and a direct drive facility. The lighthouse emits a single white flash every 15 seconds and has a luminous range of 20.6 nautical miles. It was commissioned on 17 April 1983 and has since been an important aid to navigation for ships and boats approaching the Ponnani port.
The Ponnani Lighthouse has an interesting history, with its development closely tied to the maritime trade and military activities of the region. Over the years, it has been upgraded and modernized to meet the changing needs of navigation, with the latest upgrade being the replacement of the light source with a metal halide lamp in 1995.
