The lighthouse is situated to warn mariners of the submerged "Sacrifice Rock" located about 10 kilometers offshore, following repeated ship groundings in the area. Initially equipped with a revolving dioptric lens, the original apparatus was replaced with a 230V incandescent lamp in 1995 and then with a metal-halide lamp in 1996. The lighthouse has a range of 23 nautical miles and is characterized by a flashing white light every 5 seconds.
The Kadalur Point Lighthouse has an interesting history, with the point being known as Cotta Point in the 18th century. It is believed that the lighthouse was built after a shipwreck on the rocky shores, and remnants of the wreck can still be seen today.
