The Brandaris is a lighthouse located on the Dutch Wadden Sea island of Terschelling in the Netherlands. It is situated in the province of Friesland and is the oldest lighthouse in the country. The first tower was built in 1323 to guide ships on their way to Amsterdam, but it was destroyed in 1570 due to a flood. The current tower was built in 1594 and has been equipped with various technologies over the years, including a rotating Fresnel lens in 1837 and electrification in 1907.
The Brandaris lighthouse is a square tower with a balcony and lantern, made of unpainted brick with a red lantern roof. It stands at a height of 52.5 meters and has a focal height of 56 meters. The lighthouse is still in use today, with a light characteristic of a white flash every 5 seconds. It is listed as a Rijksmonument, a national heritage site in the Netherlands, and is considered to have a very high historical value.
The Brandaris has an interesting history, with its name possibly referring to Saint Brendan of Clonfert. The lighthouse has been specially equipped to prevent birds from flying against the tower, and it is still manned around the clock. Although it is not open to the public, the Brandaris remains an important aid to navigation and a significant part of the Netherlands' cultural heritage.
