Eierland Lighthouse

The Eierland Lighthouse is situated on the northernmost tip of the Dutch island of Texel, Netherlands. The lighthouse was built in 1864, designed by Quirinus Harder, and was lit on November 1, 1864. It stands on a 20-meter high sand dune and has a cylindrical tower with a balcony and lantern. The tower is red with a white lantern and has a height of 34.7 meters and a focal height of 53.2 meters.

The lighthouse has a fascinating history, having been originally equipped with a kerosene lamp, which was later replaced with a 2000 watt Philips fluorescent lamp producing 2.85 million candela. The lighthouse suffered damage during the Georgian Uprising of Texel in April 1945 and underwent repairs, resulting in the loss of two of its original nine storeys. The lighthouse was also covered with a red plastic coating in 1977 and has been a Rijksmonument since 1982.

Today, the Eierland Lighthouse is open to visitors, who can access up to the sixth floor. The lighthouse has undergone changes over the years, but it remains an important landmark and tourist attraction on the island of Texel. Its unique history and stunning location make it a notable feature of the Netherlands' landscape. The lighthouse is still in operation, producing a light intensity of 2,850,000 candela and a range of 29 nautical miles.
