Crookhaven Heads Light

The Crookhaven Heads Light is a lighthouse located at Crookhaven Heads, a headland on the south side of the entrance to the Shoalhaven River, north of Culburra Beach, New South Wales, Australia. The lighthouse was first built in 1882, with a timber tower, and the current lighthouse was commissioned in 1904. The current lighthouse has a cylindrical tower attached to a one-story building and stands at a height of 7 meters, with a focal height of 22 meters.

The lighthouse has a quick-flashing white light with an intensity of 200 candela and a range of 8 nautical miles. However, the lighthouse is currently in a severely deteriorated condition and is considered one of the most endangered lighthouses in New South Wales. The lighthouse has suffered from repeated vandalism and was replaced with a light on a steel pole in 2007. In 2011, the lantern was removed from the lighthouse.

Despite its current state, the Crookhaven Heads Light has an interesting history. The first light on the vicinity was a red lantern made from a ship's masthead supported on two poles, present at the river entrance since 1872. The lighthouse was established as part of the Shoalhaven Signal Station, and the current lighthouse was commissioned in 1904. In 2022, a replica of the lighthouse, including the original lantern, was installed at the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum, ensuring the preservation of this historic landmark.
