Point Perpendicular Light is a historic lighthouse located at the southern tip of the Beecroft Peninsula in New South Wales, Australia. It marks the northern entrance to Jervis Bay. The lighthouse was built in 1899 and boasts an impressive height of 304 feet, featuring a cylindrical tower with a balcony and lantern. The structure is made of concrete blocks and has a solid rock foundation covered by a flat concrete base.
The original light source was a vaporized kerosene lamp, which was later upgraded to more powerful sources, including diesel generators. The lighthouse was automated in 1993 and its original light source was replaced with a skeletal tower. However, the historic lighthouse remains standing, though its future is uncertain. Point Perpendicular Light holds the distinction of being the first lighthouse in New South Wales built using precast concrete blocks.
The lighthouse was built to replace the inadequately located Cape St George Lighthouse, which was constructed in 1860. The location of Point Perpendicular was chosen after careful consideration, and construction began in 1897. The massive 1st order Fresnel lens, which was installed in the lighthouse, remains intact, showcasing the engineering prowess of the time. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority currently manages the lighthouse, ensuring its continued presence at the northern entrance to Jervis Bay.
