The Dondra Head Lighthouse is located in Dondra Head, Southern Province, Sri Lanka, and is the country's tallest lighthouse. It was built in 1890 and stands at a height of 49 meters. The lighthouse has an octagonal tower with a balcony and lantern, and is made of brick. The tower is white with yellow windows and has a focal height of 47 meters.
The lighthouse is situated near the village of Dondra, approximately 6 kilometers southeast of Matara. It was designed by Sir James Nicholas Douglass and constructed by William Douglass of the Imperial Lighthouse Service. The building materials, including bricks and steel, were imported from England, and the granite rock was supplied from quarries in Scotland and Cornwall.
The Dondra Head Lighthouse has a rich history, having been one of the few lighthouses designed to house a large Hyperradiant Fresnel lens. However, the rotating lens was removed in 2020 and replaced with a static flashing LED light, reducing its visibility range. The lighthouse is currently operated and maintained by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and is one of the four international lighthouses in Sri Lanka. It was modernized in 2000 with the introduction of a Differential Global Positioning System and is computer linked.
