Galle Lighthouse

The Galle Lighthouse is located in Galle Fort, Southern Province, Sri Lanka. It was first built by the British in 1848 as a 24.4-meter-high iron lighthouse. However, the current lighthouse was built in 1939 and features a cylindrical tower with a balcony and lantern. The tower is constructed from concrete and stone and stands at a height of 26.5 meters, with a focal height of 28 meters.

The lighthouse is operated and maintained by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. It has a range of 47 nautical miles and is characterized by a flashing white light every 15 seconds. The lighthouse is an important aid to navigation for ships approaching the Galle Harbour.

The Galle Lighthouse has an interesting history dating back to the 17th century when a lantern was placed on a rock to guide sailors. The first lighthouse was built in 1848, designed by British architect Alexander Gordon, and was constructed from cast-iron plates imported from England. Over the years, the lighthouse has undergone changes, with the current tower being built in 1939. Today, it remains Sri Lanka's oldest light station, playing a vital role in ensuring the safe passage of ships through the Galle Harbour.
