Half Moon Caye Light

Half Moon Caye Light is a historic lighthouse located on Half Moon Caye in Belize. The original lighthouse was established in 1820 and has undergone several transformations throughout its history. In 1848, a skeletal tower was restored and reinforced with a steel frame in 1931. The lighthouse was eventually deactivated in 1997 and began to deteriorate.

A new skeletal tower was built in 1998 inland from the original location, equipped with a beacon that emits four white flashes every 10 seconds. However, the old lighthouse was destroyed by Tropical Storm Matthew in 2010. Today, the Half Moon Caye Natural Monument manages the lighthouse, which is no longer operational. Despite its current status, the lighthouse remains an important part of Belize's maritime history and a notable landmark in the area.

The original lighthouse had a unique design, featuring a square pyramidal tower with a balcony and lantern. The structure stood approximately 24 meters tall and was made of metal with a brick basement foundation. Although the original lighthouse has been destroyed, its legacy lives on as a testament to the importance of maritime safety and navigation in Belize's history.
