Jaffa Light

The Jaffa Light, also known as Yafo, is a historic lighthouse located in Jaffa, Tel Aviv, Israel. It was built in 1865 by French engineers and operated until 1966. The lighthouse stands on a hilltop above the old Jaffa Port, in the historical part of the city, and is still used as a daylight navigation aid.

The Jaffa Light has a distinctive cylindrical tower with four ribs, a lantern, and a gallery, and features red and white horizontal bands. It has a height of 10 meters and was originally constructed as part of efforts to improve the port facilities, mainly due to the increase in export of citrus fruit. The lighthouse was rebuilt in 1936 by the British, who expanded the port and installed a Carbide lamp as the light source.

The lighthouse has an interesting history, with a lighthouse keeper from 1875 being an Armenian who was trained by the French company that built the lighthouse. His son and grandson also held positions at the lighthouse, with the grandson, Abu George, being responsible for keeping the lamp lit. The lighthouse was deactivated in 1966, after the Port of Ashdod was built, replacing Jaffa Port, and the glass optic was transferred to the Ashdod Light.
