The Kiipsaare Lighthouse is located on the tip of the Harilaid peninsula on the island of Saaremaa, Estonia, within the territory of Vilsandi National Park. It was built in 1933 from reinforced concrete to warn mariners on the Baltic Sea about the dangers in the vicinity of the peninsula and to assist in taking bearings. The lighthouse stands at a height of 25 meters and was initially 150 meters inland, but due to erosion, it is now more than 50 meters offshore.
The lighthouse has a notable history, having played a prominent role in the 2003 Estonian film Somnambuul, set in autumn 1944 during World War II. However, it has also faced significant challenges due to erosion, which has caused the lighthouse to lean. By the early 1990s, the sea had already reached the lighthouse, and it started to incline, leading to the removal of the generator in 1992. As a result, the Kiipsaare Lighthouse remained in the records as a daymark until 2009.
Today, the Kiipsaare Lighthouse is no longer operational, but it remains a notable landmark and tourist attraction in Saare County. Its unique location and history make it a fascinating spot to visit, and it continues to be featured in various forms of media, including photography and film. Despite its current status, the Kiipsaare Lighthouse remains an important part of Estonia's maritime heritage and a testament to the country's rich history.
