Ristna Lighthouse is located on the Kõpu Peninsula, Hiiumaa island, off the coast of the Baltic Sea in Estonia. The lighthouse was first built in 1874 as a result of frequent fogs that made the old Kõpu lighthouse nearly invisible. The structure was designed by Gustave Eiffel and initially made of cast iron. However, to improve stability, the lighthouse was cast in concrete in 1920. The current iron metal structure of the lighthouse is a hexagonal tower with a balcony and lantern, standing at a height of 30 meters. It has a red tower and a white lantern dome, marking a range of 12 nautical miles.
The Ristna Lighthouse has an interesting history, particularly in relation to its design and construction. It was built to warn sailors of drifting sea ice, which was a significant obstacle in the Gulf of Finland. The lighthouse has survived World War I with minor damage and has undergone various renovations over the years. Today, the lighthouse is automated and has been designated as EVA 673.
The Ristna Lighthouse remains an important navigational aid for ships sailing through the Baltic Sea. Its unique design and history make it a notable landmark in Estonia, and it continues to serve as a vital source of guidance for mariners.
