The Kõpu Lighthouse is located in the village of Mägipe on the Estonian island of Hiiumaa. It was completed in 1531 and is one of the oldest lighthouses in the world, having been in continuous use since then. The lighthouse is built at the top of the highest hill of Hiiumaa island, Tornimägi, and has a unique shape with a square tower and four massive buttresses.
The Kõpu Lighthouse marks the Hiiu Shoal and warns ships away from the shoreline, with its light visible from as far as 26 nautical miles away. The lighthouse is quite unique and has gone through all the stages from a medieval landmark to a modern electrified lighthouse. It is built from monolithic limestone and granite boulder tower, with a white tower and red lantern room. The lighthouse is 37.7 meters tall, with the light source being 103.6 meters above sea level, making it the highest coastal light on the Baltic Sea.
The Kõpu Lighthouse has a long and interesting history, having previously been known by its Swedish name, Övre Dagerort. It is now one of the best-known symbols and tourist sites on the island of Hiiumaa. The lighthouse has been well-maintained and still serves as an important aid to navigation for ships in the area.
