The King Fahd Causeway is a 25 km long series of bridges and causeways that connects Khobar, Saudi Arabia, and Al Jasra, Bahrain across the Gulf of Bahrain. It was opened on November 26, 1986, and is considered a vital road connection between the two countries. The causeway is managed by the King Fahd Causeway Authority and features a toll system, with fees ranging from SAR 25 to SAR 50, depending on the type of vehicle.
The King Fahd Causeway is a remarkable engineering feat, with five bridges resting on 536 concrete pylons and seven embankments in the gulf's shallower water. One of the embankments, known as Middle Island, has been converted into a sizeable artificial island with customs and immigration facilities, a mosque, gardens, and fast-food restaurants. The causeway is currently operational and serves as a major transportation route between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
The King Fahd Causeway was named after Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the former King of Saudi Arabia. It was built at a cost of US$800 million and has a width of 23 meters. The causeway has become an important part of the region's infrastructure, facilitating trade and travel between the two countries. Its unique design and construction make it an interesting example of modern engineering, and it continues to play a vital role in the economic and social development of the region.
