Point Cartwright Light is a prominent lighthouse located on Point Cartwright, near the mouth of the Mooloolah River in Mooloolaba, Queensland, Australia. The tower was built in 1978 and stands at a height of 105 feet. It is a reinforced concrete structure with a pentagonal shape and a white tower and lantern. The light source is a 200 watt sealed beam array, and it emits three flashes every 15 seconds, with a white sector visible for 23 nautical miles and a red sector visible for 11 nautical miles.
The lighthouse provides guidance into the Mooloolaba Harbour and marks the entrance to the North West Channel, a deep water channel into Moreton Bay and the Port of Brisbane. It is operated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and is open to the public, although the tower is closed.
The site has an interesting history, with the first lighthouse in the area being the Old Caloundra Light, built in 1896. However, due to changes in the shipping industry, a new lighthouse, New Caloundra Light, was constructed in 1967. However, it was eventually replaced by Point Cartwright Light in 1978, which has been in operation ever since. The lighthouse was one of a group of seven concrete towers erected by the Commonwealth between 1964 and 1979.
