The Sandvigodden Lighthouse is located in the municipality of Arendal in Agder county, Norway. It is situated on the southeast shore of the island of Hisøya, marking the west side of the entrance to the Galtesundet strait, which leads north to the town of Arendal. The lighthouse was originally built in 1844 and a new lighthouse was constructed in front of the older tower in 1934.
The new tower is 14 meters tall and is painted white with a red top, emitting a white, red, or green light depending on direction. The light can be seen for up to 5.9 nautical miles. The original lighthouse was built out of masonry and was 17 meters tall, attached to a two and a half story lighthouse keeper's house. The old lighthouse was closed in 1934 when the new automated lighthouse was built and is now a private residence.
The Sandvigodden Lighthouse has an interesting history, with the original lighthouse being funded by local ship owners. The new lighthouse was built to improve navigation in the area and has been in operation since 1934. Today, the lighthouse is an important aid to navigation and a notable landmark in the area. The old lighthouse and keeper's house have been preserved and are now a private residence, serving as a reminder of the rich history of the Sandvigodden Lighthouse.
