Punta Sardegna Lighthouse

The Punta Sardegna Lighthouse is located in Palau, Sardinia, Italy, on the northern end of a granite promontory. It was built in 1913 and features a granite quadrangular tower with a balcony and lantern atop a 2-storey keeper's house. The structure is painted white, with a grey metallic lantern dome. The lighthouse stands at 15 meters high, with a focal height of 38 meters above sea level.

The Punta Sardegna Lighthouse has a rich history, having been electrified in 1935 and automated in 1975. For twenty years, the lighthouse remained abandoned until 1995, when it was given to the Universities of Trieste and Cagliari as the seat of the Coastal and Marine Geomorphology Group. The lighthouse underwent renovation work and was opened as a research center in 2005. The light is completely automated, powered by a solar unit, and is managed by the Marina Militare.

Today, the Punta Sardegna Lighthouse is an active aid to navigation, emitting one white flash every 5 seconds, visible up to a distance of 11 nautical miles. The lighthouse is managed by the Coastal and Marine Geomorphology Group and the Marina Militare. Its unique history and stunning location make it a significant landmark in the region. The lighthouse has also been notable for having been maintained by a woman, Genoveffa Balzano, in the years 1946 and 1947, a rare occurrence at the time.
