The South Point Lighthouse is located in the southern part of Barbados, specifically at South Point. It was built in 1852 and is considered the oldest lighthouse in Barbados. The lighthouse has a cylindrical tower with a balcony and lantern, and it stands at a height of 89 feet. It features white and red horizontal bands and has a focal height of 44 meters.
The South Point Lighthouse has an interesting history, having been brought to Barbados in 1852 after being showcased at London's Great Exhibition the previous year. It was reassembled on the southernmost point of the island and has since become a national landmark and tourist attraction. Although it is still listed as an active lighthouse, its grounds are open to the public, but the tower itself is not.
The lighthouse has been a significant part of Barbadian culture and has been depicted on the reverse of the 5 cent coin of the Barbadian coinage since 1973. Today, it remains a popular tourist destination and a symbol of the island's rich history and heritage. Despite being over 160 years old, the South Point Lighthouse continues to be an important part of Barbados' landscape and identity.
