The Yeni Kale Lighthouse is located in eastern Crimea on the shore of the Kerch Strait, near the Yeni-Kale fortress on Cape Fonar. The lighthouse was first built in 1820, with oil lamps used as a light source, and was later upgraded in 1861 with a Fresnel lens and kerosene lamps. The current lighthouse is a cylindrical stone tower with a balcony and lantern, standing 27 meters tall, and was constructed in 1953.
The lighthouse has a rich and interesting history, with navigation cressets on the coast first mentioned in the Periplus of Scylax in 350 BC. During World War II, the lighthouse equipment was evacuated, and the tower was destroyed in a battle between the Red Army and Nazi Germany. After the war, a provisional wooden tower was constructed, and later replaced with the current electric-powered lighthouse. The lighthouse has been equipped with modern technology, including a GLONASS-GPS system in 2002.
The Yeni Kale Lighthouse is currently active and managed by Gosgidrografiya. Its characteristic is a flashing white and red light every 12 seconds. The lighthouse plays an important role in guiding ships navigating through the Kerch Strait, and its history and upgrades reflect the importance of this maritime route. Today, the Yeni Kale Lighthouse stands as a significant landmark and aid to navigation in the region.
